  • London Chapter Dinner of the Cavalieri del Tartufo & dei Vini d’Alba (The Oxford & Cambridge Club, London): This followed in the wake of its pretty sibling the 2010 ( Papies 94) and thus vs that it clearly showed the 2013 vintage did not delivered the promised land wine it set up to be. That been said this as expected and coupled with a bit of the light modernity of the style of Grasso delivers even at this young age. Polished and elegant , open and expressive on the nose .Ripe cherry feel, light floral at times, also a touch of a sharp edge on the palate. Well round other than that and impressively polished wine. 92 for now from us.

  • The '13 Gavarini is attractive, but still a few years from where I would recommend digging in outside of for curiosity's sake. The '13 doesn't come close to the incredible 2010 Gavarini I tasted a few weeks ago, for more reasons than age, but it's fair to say there are few '13s that match up their '10 equivalent.

The nose is actually quite perfumed for a '13 and very classic, with chalk, red cherry fruit, red floral tones, star anise, and menthol, with a beautiful sweetness to the red fruit. On the palate, the wine is still holding back a bit compared to the aromatics. The wine is medium in body, and both a bit less concentrated and a bit less refined than the incredible '10. I found red fruit, red roses, and mint, with star anise, red florals, and mint lingering on the finish. On the finish, there is a hint of that intoxicating sweetness I found on the '10, but it's there in miniature, at least for now. The tannins on this wine are smoother than I expected for a '13, but there's still room for improvement with another 5-10 years in the cellar, and to sound like a broken record, there is no comparison with the pure silkiness of the '10.

All is to say, this is a really good wine in the making. With more air, later in the night, the aromatics really became attractive, emphasizing the sweet, red fruit and floral tones and mint, which is exactly what I want out of Gavarini Chiniera. But, if you have a choice between this and the '10, take the '10!

  • My second time tasting this wine, and better than the first. The 2013 Elio Grasso is open for business. It is unusual that a Barolo this young drinks so well. It was well received at Christmas dinner. Is it worth $80 a bottle? Si Signore!

  • Bouquet of ripe cherries, cheery candy, flowers, crushed stones. Juicy palate of sweet-sour cherries, berries with a nice amount of freshness, structured, some tannins, leading to a long finish with mineral notes, some sweetness. Great balance between crunchiness left and subtle secondary and tertiary notes appearing. In a great spot for early drinking with some air.
