  • Wow- so young looking (guess late 80s vintage), very floral immediately on the nose with a heady strawberry and rose perfumed nose with a touch of uplifting dry herbs. Wonderful acidic lift making it so fresh and energising. Dry red fruits, cranberry with a kiss of balsamic vigour but it is all is such wonderful balance. Orange peel on the finish. It didn't get better in the glass and did start fading a bit after 60 minutes but why wait so long to drink this aging beauty! Fantastic and WOTN beating the Monfortino Reserva Speciale 1971 by quite some margin...

With G&R at Castellana. Wow wine!!

  • Agree with Rlove's note. Also noticed some lovely strawberry scents and flavors. This was still incredible and has life left. I didn't decant, but it got better and more interesting with air - no fading at all (we drank the whole bottle within 2 hours of opening). Great stuff.

  • Bricking ruby. Impressively youthful nose, even for someone such as myself who always seeks freshness in wine, with a pretty bouquet of cherry, dried rose, camphor, and smoke. Medium bodied with an extant but elegant tannic structure and bright acidity carrying flavors of sour cherry and iron. Excellent persistence. Giacomo Conterno's 1971 Barolo, pre-Cascina Francia, has a decade-plus to go.

  • The nose is beautiful and expressive with dried dark red fruit, tar, earth, and smoke. The palate is lush with sweet, dried red fruit, some volatile acidity, earth, and a touch of balsamic, with the tannins fully resolved - a nice finish and depth remains given the age. It is a very enjoyable wine, but at least in this bottle, there is too much VA on the palate for it to be a great one.
