Wines with Wayne (Auckland, NZ): Small pour and brief note. A treat from Wayne, him knowing that Climens is a favourite Sauternes/Barsac domaine for me. Really interesting. A complex bouquet of resin, dried apricot, button mushrooms, pears, preserved limes and lemons, dry tilled soil and dried mixed herbs with a touch of honey. On palate, a subtle, understated beauty. Only a little sweetness remains. Subtle and quite savoury. Herbal, mushroomy and earthy, showing a distinct white truffle character. Some lime juice and dried or preserved yellow fruits in the background. Lovely acidity. Great length. Still very much alive. Brilliant!

Opened for Berenice Lurton at a function in Raleigh, NC. The cork was 5/12 of an inch depressed and almost fell in when I put in the corkscrew. Despite this, this bottle was glorious! Lively, long, with great acidity with lots of developed fruit. A wow wine!

This is the living proof that great estates can prevail in tough vintages... this "Haut-Barsac" as the label says was very youthful : so much so, that when served blind, most of us thought it was either a 1990, 1989 or somewhere in the mid-1980's... Still has a lot of sugar, but is certainly refined... Not too exhuberant, more restrained and focussed... Pretty nice definition too... This wine will last easily for another 15-20 years !

A Tale of Two Chateaux - Rauzan-Segla and Climens (The Wine Society, Stevenage): Another difficult vintage. Medium/deep gold. Quite light on the nose, but again amazingly youthful at over 40 years of age, showing candied fruit, a little spice and slightly creamy orange notes. More orangey on the palate, light with slightly subdued acidity, but still very much alive, although does tail off a little on the finish.

Nose of apricot, honey and oak. Medium bodied brown sugar (not burn sugar) and apricot pineapple and hint of lime
