Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Our 2003 Estate Syrah is grown on a south-facing hillside in the Estate Vineyard where it basks in the summer sunshine. It was hand-harvested and then fermented in small open-topped fermenters. We punched down by hand and gently pressed our “modern” Basket press, to gently extract only the smoothest tannins. Aged in French and American Oak Barrels for 22 months, the wine is a deep purple-black with aromas of spicy blackberry, smoke and even bacon fat! The velvety tannins support a strong acidity.

    * 100% Estate Grown

    * 100% Syrah

    * 40% new oak barrels, a combination of French and American used in the aging. 22 months in barrel.

    * Very dark with great varietal character.

    * We have the perfect south facing hillside to grow Syrah. Here, it gets great amounts of tannin, but they are mild and supple. The fruit shows through with great intensity.

    * A very tightly wound wine that will benefit from several years of bottle age. It also benefits from decanting now (or drink ½ tonight and let it sit overnight).

    * Great now with hearty dishes like BBQ’ed steak, stews, sausages, strong cheeses, or southern French spiced dishes. In a few years it should mellow out a bit and be perfect with roasted chicken, or pork roast glazed with a fruit sauce.
