  • A blend of fruit from 15 Erstes Gewächs sites. Riesling Auslese used for dosage. 12,5% alcohol.

Medium-deep golden yellow color with a faint youthful greenish highlights. Distinctively sweet-toned, Riesling-driven nose with aromas of apricot, some lemon marmalade, light apple jam tones, a little bit of honeyed richness, a hint of beeswax and a petrolly whiff of diesel. The wine feels dry-to-dry-ish on the palate with a sparse and somewhat modest yet moderately persistent mousse, a medium body and ripe, characterful flavors of apricots and even peach candies, some beeswax, a little bit of honeyed richness, light floral tones, a hint of apple jam and a touch of banana. The moderately high acidity lends good sense of balance to the wine. The round finish is dry-ish and moderately tropical with a somewhat sweetly-fruited aftertaste of peach candies, some floral tones, a little bit of apple jam, light honeyed tones, a hint of banana and a touch of apple peel bitterness.

This is a very distinctive and quite idiosyncratic Riesling Sekt that is technically dry, but with its rather noticeable ripeness and fruit-forward nature, the wine still comes across as somewhat sweeter than it really is. I guess that Auslese addition really kicks the ripe fruit flavors up a notch! All in all, the wine left a rather similar impression as on the last time, some two years ago. I guess the wine might be a bit weird and/or too sweet-toned for some palates, but I do enjoy the quirks of this singular bubbly. Seeing as the wine doesn't show that much sense of evolution, I wouldn't have any worries seeing the wine fall apart anytime soon.

  • he Geheimrat J Brut 2009 by Weingut Wegeler in Rheingau was quite impressive, however not really inspiring ... at least for me. It showed plenty of Rothenberg attributes. Very smoky characteristics with an exceptionally strong citric salty touch. There were rather nice resemblances of assorted pastries, some elegant herbaceousness, a mostly mellow structure and even some firm substance – which is rather often missing in Riesling fizz. The distinct sweetness of this Brut was a little bit difficult for me to get jiggy with it. There are definitely plenty of fans of this kind of style. For me still a challenging enjoyment!

  • A blend of fruit from 15 Erstes Gewächs sites. Riesling Auslese used for dosage. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Rather pale yellow-green color with a slightly deeper lemon-yellow core. Sweet, very aromatic and even subtly foxy nose with characterful and slightly evolved aromas of apricot candies, some not unpleasant rubbery notes of reduction, a little bit of something waxy, light floral notes of apple blossom, a hint of ripe pear and a touch of honeyed sweetness. The wine is ripe, juicy and dry-ish on the palate with vibrant flavors of ripe lemony citrus fruits, some honeyed richness, light apricot tones, a little bit of candied gummi bear character, a hint of poached pear and a touch of beeswax. Moderately high in acidity with a soft, silky and slightly short mousse. The finish is dry-ish-to-off-dry, quite long and enjoyably refreshing with flavors of peach, some poached pear, light honeyed tones, a little bit of chalky mineral bitterness, a hint of ripe citrus fruits and a touch of spicy red apple.

A noticeably ripe, juicy and quite substantial Riesling bubbly. Sort of over-the-top, but in a good way. My first guess was Riesling Sekt, because the aromatics were quite Riesling-like, even if the wine wasn't particularly typical for a sparkling Riesling. However, even though I had tasted the wine at some point before, it didn't come into my mind, so I guessed Rhenhessen and Baden instead of Rheingau. All in all, a distinctive fizzy Riesling that is sort of blockbuster-ish in style, yet still surprisingly crisp and refreshing. Drinks really well now, but most likely is capable for developing for years more. Fun stuff, recommended.

  • A blend of fruit from 15 Erstes Gewächs sites. Riesling Auslese used for dosage. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Pale and rather neutral yellow-green color. Ripe, somewhat developed and slightly waxy nose with aromas of golden apples, some ripe pear, a little bit of apple blossom, light autolytic notes of cookie dough, a hint of sweet yellow fruits and a touch of savory spices. The wine is dry, ripe and slightly developed on the palate with flavors of bruised apples, perfumed floral tones, some sweet white fruits, a little bit of cookie dough, light honeyed tones, a woolly hint of lanolin and a reductive touch of rubber. The wine is moderately high in acidity with a light, creamy and smooth mousse. The finish is lively, bright and mineral with quite long flavors of ripe citrus fruits, some steely minerality, a little bit of sweet golden apples, a hint of honeyed richness and a touch of white peach.

A ripe, juicy and harmonious Riesling bubbly with lots of nuance, lovely structure and great intensity. The wine exhibits a little bit of developed character, but based on the subtly reductive qualities here, I can imagine the wine will continue to develop for years more - especially when the wine is so remarkably youthful for a 10 yo fizz. Great stuff that can be enjoyed now or cellared for at least a handful of years more, if not longer. Recommended.

  • “English sparkling wines vs continental bubbles”, aperitif (blind): This was an interesting experience. We guessed 2010 von Winning Riesling Sekt Brut (even if I don’t know if that bottling exists), two to three years on the lees, disgorged four years ago, with an aged Auslese Riesling dosage - not far off.

The wine was light to medium lemon in colour and offered stone fruit aromas, lavender soap and a mild fusty note on the nose and palate, with an oak tannin-like impression on the sides of the tongue, medium-level acidity and good length. The mousse was still lively and the medium-bodied wine had a good, slightly soapy mouthfeel. A good wine - and it’s holding up very well. (NR)
