Dinner with Mark at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): Bottle 001154, Tastevintage bottling. Per the label, selected in 1981 by the Gourmet Jury of the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. A preternaturally youthful nose, this shows a bit of high-toned sweetness. The palate is gorgeous, and shows an incredible amount of ripe fruit and sweetness. Plenty of aged autumnal character as well. This is nowhere close to over the hill, and did not falter a single time over the course of five hours, which makes me suspect that what's in this bottle isn't all straight up pinot noir wine. If anything, given a bit of port-like fruit, I'd guess that a bit of marc or some other spirit was tossed into the barrel, which has helped hold this wine up over the last 39 years. Regardless, it's delicious.
