  Tasted blind. A plethora of aromas: Tertiary notes of truffles, mushrooms and tobacco, black currant and cassis fruit, leather and gingerbread, alpine herbs and rooibos tea, basil and dried tomatoes. More spice and a bit of smoke. Plenty of structural tannin adding grip while still slightly mouthcoating in nature. Strong balance and a more red cherry type of fruit. This wine shines with precision and elegance and is versatile beyond belief. Second time in only a matter of weeks and consistently mind-blowing.

  1983 vintage horizontal with >20 wines, mostly from Bordeaux. Key observations: 1/ Acceptable vintage for Champagne with DP over-delivering, 2/ Laville Haut Brion is a masterpiece among the whites, 3/ Bordeaux is going strong at 40 years of age with stand-outs Latour and Margaux. 4/ No need to chase any Napa’s from the vintage, 5/ off-piste Italians kept up impressively with Soldera an undisputed medalist.
  
  Tasting note:
  Double-decanted. Beautiful red and dark cherry fruit along with earth, leather, dried tomatoes and dried herbs. Densely packed aroma profile, gaining in intensity and complexity, adding more tobacco and leather notes. Amazing tension on the palate, juicy and fresh with structural tannin and impeccable balance. This is an intellectual, if not philosophical wine.

  Not the best bottle but still delicious if a bit faded and muddled for the usually precise Soldera. At Penavic wine dinner atop 15 Hudson Yards.

  Bottiglia comprata un paio di anni fa a un’asta (quindi con tutte le incognite del caso). Aperta alle 14 e decantata due ore prima di cena, l’iniziale chiusura sparisce rapidamente e dopo 5 ore si rivela un caleidoscopio di aromi che ti trascina nella magia. Il colore è ancora bellissimo, fra rubino e granato. L’evoluzione dei profumi nel corso della serata è eccezionale: si alternano momenti di netta ciliegia ai classici profumi di tabacco e affumicatura, ricordi floreali e tracce di incenso, sottobosco e funghi, in una progressione emozionante. Se possibile la bocca è ancora meglio, perfettamente coerente con il naso, accompagnata da una freschezza ancora più che presente e che regge una struttura monumentale e perfettamente equilibrata, senza alcuna traccia di stanchezza, con una persistenza che ti accompagna a lungo. Un vino leggendario, che ho avuto la fortuna di bere al suo apice. Eccezionale
