  • Deep tawny colour. Nose is sweet with dried fruit and some baking spice. Notes of raisins, figs, cinnamon, vanilla. Aspects of nose replicated in the taste. Full body, dusty medium tannins, medium acid. Good dessert wine, but fairly simple and disjointed. Past it's prime.

  • Tasting Training for WSET Level 4, Units D4 + D5 - Session 9: The wine has a medium tawny colour. The nose has medium(+) intensity and shows some primary characteristics of red fruit (cranberry) and black fruit (plum), but mostly tertiary characteristic of dried fruit (dried red cherry, prune, fig) and walnut.

On the palate the wine is sweet, with medium acidity, medium tannin, medium alcohol, and a medium body. The flavour intensity is medium(+), flavours are mostly tertiary and include dried fruit (dried red cherry, prune, fig), coffee, chocolate and walnut. The finish has medium length, with a sugary aftertaste. The overall impression is simple and developed.

This is a good quality wine since it has good intensity, shows multiple tertiary characteristics (in particular on the palate), the alcohol is well-integrated, and the wine has medium length. To be considered being of very good quality the wine would need greater length and in particular greater complexity.

The wine is perceived as simple and developed, and has already passed its prime drinking window, and is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

    NB: Synthetic cork. Drink up.

  • 100% Grenache Noir, 15,5% alcohol, 110 g/l residual sugar.

Somewhat translucent pomegranate red color with a hint of maroon hue. Almost completely clear rim. The nose feels sweet and quite concentrated with aromas of overripe strawberries, some Play-Doh, a little bit of fermented black cherries, light boozy notes of grappa, a hint of raisin, a touch of peppery spice and a whiff of wet dog. The wine is quite full-bodied, youthful and sweet on the palate with rich flavors of blackberry jam, peppery spice, some pruney dark fruits, a little bit of strawberry, a hint of herbal bitterness and a touch of pomegranate. The high alcohol makes the mouthfeel rather hot. Overall the wine is pretty structured with moderately high acidity and gentle, lightly grippy tannins. The finish is quite warm and somewhat boozy with rich and pretty long flavors of pruney dark fruits, some peppery spice, a little bit of fermenting strawberries, a hint of blueberry-and-blackberry jam and a touch of syrupy molasses.

A nice, juicy and balanced fortified wine, but one that feels rather young and a bit awkward - especially the fortifying spirits seem to be still somewhat unintegrated, lending their own grappa-like character to the wine. Overall the wine reminds me of a young Ruby Port. I guess the wine could benefit from some aging in the hopes it would become better integrated, but I doubt any cellaring will make this a "great" wine. This seems to be a nice entry-level vin doux naturel, but nothing beyond that. Priced according to its quality at 21€ for a half-liter bottle.
