  • Monthly Tasting Group: Rhones (Noyes and Cutler, St. Paul, MN): Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Drank this next to an equally beguiling '94 Beaucastel. The camps seemed to be somewhat split in their preferences. It was a tough choice for me, thoroughly enjoying both wines. The Donjon was also quite perfumed and floral, very tangy acidity, juicy cherry fruit, blood and pomegrante, spices and leather stand out. In the end, I was a bit more captivated by the "94's nose and resolve.

  • Jim & Michelenes' btl at our Sunday night big wine group Rhone dinner at Noyes & Cutler. A perfect Lowertown St Paul venue for our group and theme! Great food, service & roomy! I see that the '00 was my WOTN back in 2017. All my buddies know that I'm not CDP guy any longer but Donjon is impossible not to love for anyone w/a penchant for classically styled, terroir driven wines. My buddies say the wine has changed post 2005 but I suspect more recent vintages just need abundant age like this btl! After nearly 23yrs, this is phenomenal! So much character & depth on a fully resolved but energetic palate! This was bought locally on release. The fruit actually seamed to pulsate tonight. Just beamed with focused fruit richness. I loved everything about this wine and 40% of my cellar is Burgundy while less 5% is CDP :). I also had a terrific '01 recently that was just a step behind this lovely '00.

  • An old wine. Well perfumed on day one, dark fruit, plum, some tobacco, espresso. Medium length, sweet, tannins. Very smokey on day two, very reduced fruit. I have had some nice bottles in the past years, so: drink up!

  • Collected from Octavian today after sleeping there since arrival in the UK.
I had concerns about this - but no fear. Minimal bricking and bright dark red. Not dried out at all - dark fruits with pepper and spice, some olives, earth and liquorice. Good length. Very drinkable with energy, drive and excitement.
Would be great with XMas lunch or with cold meats on Boxing Day. Decisions, decisions........

  • From magnum. Luckily much better than anticipated as I have had some mixed experiences with the 2000 Vieux Donjon. This bottle performed absolutely great with the Christmas dinner. Dark colour with teal rim. Spice and garrigue notes on the nose. Balanced and long taste with a slight tannic grip that complimented the duck confit very nicely

Rockss and Fruit

(Le Vieux Donjon) This was mediocre and had a weird burnt quality to it. Low acid and plummy roasted flavors. Could be off or my dislike of CDP is beginning to make me bias in ant-Grenache way? Who knows.
