  • From a controversial vintage -- one where I have liked certain wines (speaking for all of the Côte d'Or) but generally not liked the style and expression of the vintage.

I always bought Maume in vintages I liked, but the fact that I purchased only this bottle (and a bottle of Mazis-Chambertin) is good evidence that this wine young did not overwhelm me.

Deep red cherry color. Some spice in the nose, but no real precision to red and dark fruits that continue in the mouth. Good freshness in the mouth for a 30 year-old wine, fairly rich and broad with power and some of the tension of Lavaux St-Jacques, but without the minerality or energy that I consider markers of the vineyard.

At this point, the wine is best with relatively bland foods -- roast pork or fowl or a cheese that is not too intense so that one can fully appreciate the subtle shades of the flavors. Glad to have opened this today, but not sad that I did not cellar it in quantity. Cellared since original release. Bonne fête nationale!
