My first foray into port, at least since getting into wine for real several years ago. I got 4 bottles to start: this basic ruby, two LBV's (one with bottle age), and a young vintage port. Started with this. I really do NOT have a sweet tooth, but I wanted to get to know the wines a little.
Very simple, but especially as someone largely uninterested in dessert wines, I found it surprisingly balanced. Basically lots of red cherry syrup, almost maraschino-like, but tasty, and I found the high alcohol and sweetness to be pretty gentle. Tasted almost like a little cordial. I enjoyed it quite a bit for $10 (half bottle) although I don't feel the need to buy again.

Deep ruby colour. Medium (+) and developing nose with red plum, ripe red cherry, mint and vanilla. Medium (+) taste of red plum, red cherry, mint and vanilla with hints of alcohol. Medium long and sweet finish. High acidity. Light tannins. Full body. A very good Ruby Port. Drink now. Goes well with cheeses or chocolate.

A good Ruby Port that lacks some complexity and length. Drink now. Goes well with cheeses or chocolate.
