  • Early Mar 2024, Rheingau Gourmet Festival, rarity diner “25 vintages of Chateau Montrose”: bottle immediately opened before consumption; clear dark rubin color; intense nose of cherries, strawberries and some mint; like well-crafted berry juice on the palate; light/medium body. 91-92/100

    Classic mature claret.

    Vintages of flight III:
    1952 - 1953 - 1966 - 1976 - 1979 - 1981

  • My second bottle of 3, and I was hoping last time out it was a blip. However, once again this was uninspiring, and very tired and falling apart. I had had high hopes with this dark horse, but obviously the batch was compromised.

  • I think I was unlucky with this bottle after reading other reviews, and possibly it was carrying a slight taint. It was the first of 3, and I had high hopes as this is an under the radar dark horse. It does improve significantly with air, and next time I'll give it 2 or 3 hours in the decanter. Fingers crossed for the next 2.

  • Château Montrose 1981
Probably peaked more than 10 years ago.
The wine has a strong sense of maturity with nuances of dead wood and cedar wood, but it is slightly thin-bodied.
Perhaps the influence of the vintage is significant.
The charm of this Bordeaux-like chateau, which is relatively in the middle (in my opinion) of Saint-Estephe, which is full of individuality, can be sensed.
Even if it is more than 40 years old, it still has enough structure as a wine, and you can fully enjoy the pleasure of old French wine.
    It was a meaningful time.
