  • Opened in a tasting of various Mike Smith wines. One + hour of air, has that nice silky mouthfeel i like in the Myriad wines. 2014 seems to be coming around with some air. Notes of anise, big red and blue fruits, cocoa powdered tannins are soft and integrated, giving just the right frame and structure for this wine. 6 -9 months from now - this wine ought to be singing. 97 now with a upside to 98 in a few months

  • I consider this a refined wine, however the texture and finish are not characteristic of 95 point wine. I value depth, texture, and finish over refinement hence my ranking of 92 reflects this in scoring this wine. I am also not sure more time will benefit this wine given how it's structured, it may add a bit of weight over the next couple years, but not substantially.

Overall this wine is good but far from epic.

  • Previous notes apply. Served next to a 2015 Carter OG. The OG was much more royal and advanced complexity-wise than the GIII, but this wine held up all of its stacked flavors in spades. Pleasurable and fun as always.

  • My experience with Mike Smith single vineyard cabs has been very consistent. This is a big monolithic dark wine that is dominated by alcoholic heat for the first hour or so. There is a massive amount of fruit hidden behind the alcohol, but I am unable to distinguish any separate elements. No noticeable oak, etc. after two hours, a small amount of minerals and dust emerges on the finish. In all fairness, I tend to be a drink em young, PnP kind of guy. I find it hard to get beyond the alcohol burn in these wines when young

  • Previous notes apply. This bottle seemed a little more mellow at first. It took a couple hours of air to deepen its flavor profile a bit more. It had a more beautiful delivery (as opposed to a powerful fruit punch of flavor as is sometimes the case with these in their youth).

Served side-by-side with a '14 Myriad NV. The GIII had more depth mid-palate, with a drive/push across the palate through the back end that was longer and more encompassing. The NV held its own, but I much preferred the GIII by comparison. I agree with others that this is indeed becoming less intense/powerful over time. I'm all good with it, as the pleasure factor is still front and center.

94 points this go-around. Drink now and over the next few years.
