  • Quite light, lots of red fruit, green pepper. It opened up after a bit and released more aromas of ripe fruit, as well as developed a nicer structure.

  • Bordeaux first-growth lunch: Had an obtrusive iron note that I found distracting. Tertiary notes but fresh for a '79 but thought this wasn't very interesting, tannins were still rather blocky.

  • I always love the nose on an Haut Brion - that telltale tobacco note always gets me. Expansive on the palate, this is just beautiful tonight.

  • Perfectly stored bottle. Slow oxed bottle for an hour and consumed a glass over 60ish minutes thereafter. It had layers of wood smoke, cigar box and burnt embers. The dried black fruit was there but buried deep for my liking. Still fresh and very enjoyable. Certainly at peak, I would drink these up as I see more downside coming at this stage. Still a great treat, thank you Dan!

  • From a small capped bottle. Very tertiary. Sometimes nothing on the nose and other times a intoxicating melange of Nutty, earthy, tobacco with hints of red fruits a wonderful sweetness. Very elegant and perfumed - lingering tertiary sweetness and nuttiness. At first this seemed to drop off on the end palate and finish but with fatty meat it doesn’t anymore. The finish is long and sneaky - with spice and tobacco hiding at the edges and then swooping back in. It’s gotten better with hours open from its little bottle. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5-18/20.

Day 2: nose is consistently beautiful now with abstract sweetness, pipeweed and carob and a touch of dry aged steak. Very umami. The palate has put on some weight and is excellent with the tobacco, nutty, dry aged meaty and carob - it has excellent depth and flavor but is so velvety and elegant. long umami finish. superb. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.
