I caught lightning in a bottle, with this 46-year-old bottle. I opened another one 6 years ago, and it was considerably diminished and faded. This bottle had it all; the color was perfect, with a beautiful bouquet, vibrant fruits, and lush with secondary and tertiary flavors. It was a hands-down winner of our trip against many highly rated and costly competitors. We rated it as 100, considering its age, and 96-97, not considering its vintage.

Fresh! Smells and tastes like old Bordeaux, I doubt I’d have guessed Napa here had this been served blind. Fruit is ripe and silky, aromaticallt it’s a bit old and musty, but not in a bad way. Solid wine!

Picked for entertaining a crowd on Sunday evening, and it did not disappoint. Showed great from the Reidel Somm glass with soft and plummy fruit, cedar, violets and mint.
A touch of St. Julien funk up front that was much more evident in a smaller glass. Very interesting the way this showed differently out of the Vinum v. Somm glass.

I really love those old bottles of Mondavi, especially the reserve bottlings. This bottle was not a reserve, but it drank like one. Cork was in great shape and the color showed just a touch of bricking. This dispalyed some sour plum flavors upon opening, but as is usually the case with old Mondavi, this really came alive after an hour in the decanter. Deep, dark cherry, sweet plum, smoke, tar, coffee, licorice with a long, smooth finish. Just lovely.

This regular Napa bottling shows how well made Napa wines from this era are and it’s why Napa is on the map. Slight bricking. While certainly starting to decline the fruit is still strong and the mellowed tannins are still present.
