  • Notes are limited. Color is dark, like all the D’Oliveira wines poured tonight. Richer and warmer than the 1948 Barbetio Malvasia. Elements of plum, toffy, and molasses on the nose and palate. Someone said: “smoky.” The first wine tried to night that exhibited a touch of chocolate. Flavors seemed relaxed. Well balanced with “warm” flavors. A sherry element too. Good rick flavors. Butter. Acidity was clearly present but not out of balance.

All twelve wines poured were decanted two days before serving.

(Served with cheeses, almonds and seasonal fruits.)

  • The Rare Wine Company and Vinhos Barbeito Madeira Tasting (celebrating a 20 year partnership): Ricardo filled 177 bottles from demijohn in February of 2015. This was a group favorite the last time I had it, about six months ago, and it once again offered an impressive performance. This exhibited the more typical Barbeito restraint when it comes to Malvasia. Focused and precise, with figs, marmalade and tart lemons. While a sleek wine, there is no lack of power here. A pungent, tangy wine with outstanding attack, breadth and lift. This really fires off in all directions with head-spinning intensity. A deep, deep wine and a reference point for what Madeira can achieve.
