Decanted and drank over several hours. Opened up quickly in the glass. Medium full bodied and well balanced. Still on the upswing. It was excellent again with baked ham dinner.

My bottle was just okay. On opening all of the fruit was buried beneath old wine flavors (mushroom, earth, soy). After about an hour and a half it came into a bit more balance and was at least enjoyable but did not blow me away by any means. I'll give my next bottle a much longer decant.

Open for business after about 15 minutes in the decanter. Red raspberry, milk chocolate, and a big hit of musty wood. Big and brawny in the mouth with more red raspberry and wine-stained wood. Surprisingly primary and concentrated with assertive tannins. New-world in style. Could easily have been mistaken for a young California Zinfandel. Was hoping for more nuance and rusticity. I may hold the few I have left to see if things calm down.

What better place to start our monthly wine tour of Spain than in Rioja. Rioja is to Spain as Piedmont is to Italy. How many times do you uncork a bottle, recognize the name, place or varietal and not much more than that. Most of us don't have the time or inclination for that. How much more special would it be to understand not just the terroir but the history, culture and people of that place?
This Tempranillo blend with 11 years of bottle age displays a red garnet color. It offers a chewy delight of sweet cherries. Balanced, round and full in the mouth. A dry, dusty finish with tannins that pause rather than choke. This wine is drinking nicely now. I wouldn't rely on the Cellar Tracker estimate of the drinking window that extends to 2050. If you have that much time to wait, then devote some time to addressing the question I asked earlier in this note.
