  • this bottle was among those in the collection, identified through researching tasting notes of the wine afficionados, as being past its prime. this is another instance in which the afficionados prove to be less than a reliable source of advice. the wine is still perfectly intact. deep purple color, no browning, no fading. the aroma reflects typical amarone qualities. it is forthcoming throughout a 45 minute drinking period accompanied by roast beef, fried egg plant and potatoes. stands up to the food well. this is the kind of wine that it seems to me, makes more sense to say tastes like wine rather than trying to liken it to a fruit. (does anyone taste a fruit and liken it to amarone wine or corvina grapes? well, i guess we have to acknowledge the 5 month tray drying process and say that there is some prune in there along with plum. the finish is firm but not long lasting. fruit appears to be in balance with fully resolved tannins. however, the overall structure of the wine, and the fact that it did not fade in the glass, suggests that it still has some longevity. overall, a very pleasurable tasting experience. wish i had more of it. will look to obtain more recent vintages although it has gotten a bit pricey.
