  • The last of the 2012's. A spectacular vintage and this bottle was as vibrant and special as its predecessors. Lovely honey, vanilla, peach notes burst onto the palate and leaves you wanting to go back again and again.

  • Greatly enjoyed the Bacigalupi run by Rudd at Edge Hill. Creamy deep Chardonnay. Sorry it had finished but a real treat while it was available.

  • Ready to drink, offers up lemon curd and cream, a hit of zest and trailed by slate and oak. Balanced but toward the bigger oakier end but in no way overdone. Lovely and suffers from none of the somnolence of its bigger red brethren from the same vintage. What a shame Edge Hill is no more as this was one of my favorite whites.

  • Another great experience with the 2013 Bacigalupi, one of the more Burgundian expressions in California coming from very old Chardonnay vines at the end of their lifetime. The best part is clearly the nose with intense matchstick, smoky, toasty notes as well as fresh citrus driven fruit. A bit less interesting, expressive and layered on the palate but still a joy to drink.

TN: Previous notes apply. Superb nose driven by smoke, toast, reduction along mainly citrus aromas. Very inviting and intriguing, superbly defined and the clear highlight here. Fresh yet creamy on the palate with the same aromas but more toned done. Medium length.

Decanting: No decanting needed, opened-up fairly quickly in the glass.

  • Tasted double blind. I consider myself lucky to taste this beauty for the third time in a year. Although not as good as the first bottle this was a very impressive showing with intense smokey, toasty aromas which I adore, great intensity and precision, superb freshness. The first bottle (98 points) showed much more complex but this still is a great wine and one of the best Californian Chardonnays I’ve had. Not on par with Aubert Chardonnays (my #1 Californian Chardonnay) which shine with so much elegance and depth but probably easier to drink thanks to a light-footed structure and texture not all Auberts have. Nose 97, palate 93-94.

TN: On the nose, intense smoke, toasted oak, reduction, creamy citrus, apple and just hints of sweet tropical fruit. Superbly defined and overall the absolute highlight here. 97 points. Great structure with just enough creaminess to be charming and easy to drink and a great and well-integrated acidity to keep it light and fresh. More toasted oak, reduction, citrus, apple, hints of tropical fruits on the palate. Very harmonious and balanced with the sharpness as the highlight.

TN: No extended decanting needed. 30+ minutes will do the job.
