  • Dead. Perfect cork plus perfect storage. And I’ve had alive bottles from this vintage and from this cellar which is my father’s cellar. Yet, alas, this bottle was dead. The life of a wine is a curious thing. Not unlike the life of a person.

  • Opening Patrimonio wines is like opening a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re going to get. Some times lithe, agile wines; sometimes unnecessarily oxidative and limp. By and large, I think the Antoine Arenas fall into the more desirable former camp, as this bottle was still tight, primary, and brightly granitic without sacrificing complexity—sangiovese rarely pairs this well with seafood (candidly, rich seafood and aioli). Definitely a wine to look out for, as it was one of Antoine’s final vintages (if not the final).

  • Excellent fruity number - comes alive with cheese (in this case, a stinky ripe Brie analogue)

  • Ash, aromatic tree sap, dark fruit, black pepper on the nose. Fine presence on the palate, with precisely spread layers of dark tannic fruit and sparkling acids, aromatic tannic back note moving into a lingering acid finish. Welcoming but enigmatic, dark but playful.

  • Interesting wine, but not the most pleasurable. Dark, translucent colour. In the nose a delightful and precise expression of rasperry and some darker fruit - but thats about it. This limited aromatic spectrum continues in the mouth, where the wine is medium-bodied, but quite powerful. The distracting feature is its lack of generosity. While I usually like fresh reds akin to Burgundy or Piedmont, this one is too dry, acidic and tannic for me.
The wine may improve with age, as it still feels very young, but I would not bet on that. The mineral quality, which is mentioned in other TNs, is not evident for me, but may be hidden behind all the sharpness and tannin. The wine could work with a big piece of beef though.

Addition: On day 3 the wine has become more interesting, with notes of truffles adding complexity to smell and taste. Yet the mouthfeel remains angular and tough.
