  • Recent purchase - great aroma upon opening, and served without decanting. Wow, this is great - first Black Cat I haven't had to give some air. Tannins are a little tight at first but over time everything resolves into a very smooth, nicely complicated ride. Very happy that this wine does so well at 21 years of age.

  • Purchased on Wineberserkers annual Berserkerday event. This wine was paired with a Flannery Beef T-Bone and the combo was out of this world. The wine drank well from the first pour with wonderful aromas and smooth tannins and a nice finish. Outstanding!

  • This is an absolute show stopper and a Berserkerday Score! I feel privelaged to drink 1 of 300 bottles made. It also reminds me of why I used to drink a lot of CS. It is well aged, but I think it is still going up! Perfect cabernet fruit of cool and tart red and black cherries, with great texture and crunchiness. It is large, but not weighty, as it glides easily across the palate. It has a great, delicious finish that made me go check CT to see if I had ordered more than one bottle. Dang, I didn't.

  • Pairing Champagnes to Black Cats (Calistoga, CA): I think the previous notes (even with time differences between them) caught a core difference between the '02 EMH and other vintages of EMH. This one has more oak- new barrel for this vintage (later vintages have lower levels of new oak, if I recall correctly) . It does represent now a good mature 'emh black cat' wine with the hints smoky, tabacco, leather noted by previous tasters. Rich in fruit and floral on the palate. Nice finish (not as long as the '01 and '00). More berries/currant on the palate, I think. I found it very enjoyable, but it needed time in the decanter to 'balance' the oak (that was more dominant on PnP). First time I tasted the '02. I would probably decant it for at least 3 hours if I were to open it again. It was also a great example of the influence of new/neutral oak on the development of the cabs over time.

I think the current 'scores' given so far (92-93 range at the time this note is written) reflect well, but the key would be one's preference for new oak vs. neutral

  • Nose wide open rich and fruity, hints of smoke and leather to complement the dark fruit. Palate is rich, silky and tasty, with some dark cherry and Cabernet flavors. Some great balance as well - mouth watering acid to balance the fruit, goes great with roast chicken. Very good.
