  • Note from (faulty) memory. Nose had spice and red berry. Dry, savory, herb and light plum flavors. Very enjoyable. It seemed typically Volnay on limited experience. Has a good 5 years more.

  • Macerated with the skins for 4-5 days, fermented spontaneously on indigenous yeasts for two weeks, aged for 15-18 months in old oak barrels. 12,5% alcohol.

Luminous and very translucent cherry red color with a hint of youthful blue hue. Very clear - almost colorless - rim. The nose is very open and expressive with lots of wild and even slightly sappy green tones with aromas of ripe red cherries, herbal notes of oregano and thyme, a little bit of brambly blackberry, a herbaceous hint of bell pepper, light floral and zesty notes of Campari and a touch of earthy Pinosity. Lots of layers here and even when the wine is atypically green-toned for a Pinot Noir, it never really feels like under-ripe or aggressively vegetal. The wine is silky, moderately full-bodied and smooth on the palate with vibrant, playful flavors of ripe red cherries, brambly raspberries, some wild strawberries, a little bit of crunchy black berries, light aromatic herbal tones, a hint of wild Campari-like character and a touch of earthy minerality. There's lovely sense of purity and finesse here with attractive sweet undercurrent of ripe fruit. The structure relies completely on the bright, high acidity as the tannins feel very light, gently textural and completely without grip. The supple, juicy and moderately long finish is bright, fruity and vibrant with flavors of sweet red fruits, black cherries, some aromatic and slightly bitter herbal tones, a hint of wild strawberry and a touch of raspberry jam.

A very charming, playful and vibrant little Volnay that has its own, perfumed natural wine air to it, but overall the wine is all about purity and finesse, so there's really nothing truly funky or geeky here - the emphasis is on the ripe yet very fresh fruit and sheer drinkability. This isn't a brooding and dead-serious red Burgundy, but all about wine being fun, thoroughly drinkable and still complex enough to give pleasure to those who prefer to sip wine slowly and marvel how it slowly changes, revealing new layers upon new layers. Very lovely, drinkable and immensely attractive. Perhaps better suited for early drinking than extended cellaring.
