Community Tasting Notes (3) Avg Score: 84.7 points

  • Appearance: opaque maroon/garnet, going to clear pink, medium weight and viscosity. On the nose: damp earth, wood, lead pencil, tobacco, and plum. On the palate: plum, subtle blueberry notes, leather; tannins still pretty tight (here I am disagreeing with my earlier TN, despite its having been written when the bottle had a year less age). Not esp generous with its fruit, and has plenty of acid to play against the fruit that is present. In short, this is an old school Bordeaux. I am less enthusiastic now than the earlier TN suggests I once was. It now strikes me as a perfectly serviceable Tuesday night wine with structure, typicity, and old world charm in spades (which is nothing to sneeze at), but not more than that. (Still a strong QPR for the $10 I paid.)

  • Ruby red color, fades to clear violet; good legs, throwing substantial sediment. Aromas of lead pencil, violet, plum, and spice/black pepper. On the palate I get blueberry, plummy red fruit, spice, some leathery tobacco flavors, and medium soft tannins. Long finish. Complex and evolving. Impressive effort; excellent instance of its type. I believe it will continue to improve as the tannins soften further; will hold my remaining bottle for another year or so. (I picked this up at a clearance price of $10/bottle; at that bargain bin price this is one of the best QPRs I've ever had! Wish I had bought more.)
