Deep purple. Dark fruits and engine-level alcohol on the nose. Viscous on the glass pointing to higher alcohol content. Opened for an hour before tasting and it was still too tight. Waited another hour and it improved significantly - lush mouth feel, blackberries, blueberries, tar, tobacco, leather, some spice, mild florality, and firm tannins. More in the modern style. I enjoyed it more as the wine was left to open.
Would recommend holding for another a few years as I think will soften as well as improve.

A nice weekday wine. Slightly syrupy but not overly so. Redolent of blackberries, tobacco, leather, and engine grease. With a hint of poblano. Good with well spiced food.

No score for a wine I simply hated from the first whiff. It may be the perfect expression of this appellation but I won't be drinking another one. Absurdly heady aromas of stewed black fruits and alcohol. Almost reeks. Thick and hot in the mouth, with candied red fruit flavors finishing in a squishy mess. I had to grab the bottle after the first sip to confirm my worst fear: 15.5% alcohol. Unpleasant assault on the senses, as though someone in a hot climate still took Robert Parker seriously. Some may like this style and that's fine. Horses for courses.

Medium ruby, less dense than I expected. Fairly "modern" with nose of new oak, raisin and red cherry fruit. Medium-short finish with faint sweetness.
