  • Drank this a year ago but it was so amazing that it is worth sharing. In Magnum sourced from a perfect cellar.

We didn’t really know what to expect opening this, maybe just the joy to taste a old Champagne from a special cuvee in a proper bottle size.
Popping the cork, no psshhhit, concern. Pour the wine, beautiful golden colour, sniff, taste, BOOM amazing. Bubbles are still there, great depth, finish, acidity. Fabulous memory

  • I was a bit surprised it was a 1985 due to the sharp nature of the fruit. Bright candied fruit on the palate with almost a tart acidity. But what was interesting was the fact that this burnt toffee flavor lingered in the background and really added a twist to the palate.

  • Dry and dusty; shows that classic 1985 acidity and austerity. More intellectually interesting than hedonistic, this has none of Mumm's usual obvious caramel and toffee notes. The wine needs lots of time and air - consider decanting - and, with patience, eventually broadens to reveal notes of dried button mushrooms, chalk and celeriac. A precursor to modern champagne's trend towards dryness, austerity and soil expression. Finer, broader and more enjoyable on the second evening.
