Deep purple, with roasted meat aromas, cracked pepper, licorice, tar and dark blaack fruits. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with deep, brooding fruits, an unctuous mouthfeel, and a good savory finish emphasizing the roasted meat and licorice elements.

The Porcupine Ridge, Coastal Region, 2003 Syrah is a wine I've had a love hate relationship with over the years as some previous vintages (the 2001 in particular) were very hot (leaving a burning sensation in the back of the mouth). The 2003 is simply a big, mouth-filling wine and very good value at $10. It has a huge nose with spice, blackberry and some other characteristics that I could simply not pin down for nearly three hours (and I did not care, I was enjoying the wine too much). It is another example of fantastic value for money wines coming out of South Africa and a real sign that some really high quality Syrah will be coming from there in the future. Second night: just as good with seconday notes of tobacco, figs, and even riper fruit.

Ouais...typique: beaucoup d'alcool, aromatique puissante mais peu subtile, pas de tannins, acidité basse. Ce n'est pas mon truc.

Simple, casual wine. Lots of fruits, minerals. However, finish is very hollow...
