  • Not always a fan of Petite Sirah, so I'm not certain how this ended up in my cellar. Noticed it there last night, figured it was probably declining, so popped and poured.

It's amazing how much power this juice still has, and reminds me why I don't buy much of it. The raisiny notes others have mentioned are definitely present as us the slightly hot mouth feel that is a characteristic of this grape. Aroma is unmistakably one of an aged wine. Really not bad at all, but if you have any, drink up!

  • The 2001 and 2003 vintages of this are still holding and showing well. The '97 exhibits very dark plum purple; medium bodied, still holding on but a tone of mustiness, raisin, dill and asparagus with a rather high alcohol heat predominate over the muted black cherry fruit, overtaken by a big layer of leather turning to smokey dark chocolate mocha, anise and cedar on a firm tight hard tannin finish. Still approachable but most certainly past its prime?

  • We drank this at my first clean out the cellar party. The party was 10/31/09.

  • Very dark, rich, almost but not quite opaque garnet colour. Nose is soft, a little hot, and reminiscent of port. Dark dried fruits (raisin, black cherry), jammy, some leather. Rich.

Tasted it's SOUR, puckering my mouth noticeably and almost unpleasantly; it's a touch too acidic. Tannins hit right after, still quite bold but nicely integrated. Medium-bodied but with a richer mouthfeel; this wine really coats the mouth. I think I understand the term 'chewy' for the first time, now.

Dark fruit as promised by the nose, but brighter on the palate; sour cherry, raspberry jam. Finish lasts forever, but it drops off suddenly in an odd way; notes of aged leather and astringent pipe tobacco. I find this wine incredibly evocative, like a luxurious manly-man's bachelor pad. Maybe a bachelor who's a bit sour. :D

  • Popped and poured. Deep violet color. Good nose of blackberries and a little heat. On the palate, still a lot of tannins left, but seemed slightly off balance and the tannins caused a bitter after taste that was not quite pleasant.
