  • (Not a) birthday dinner (Hinsdale, IL): I think I kind of get it now -- this drinks like Labet, and has a pretty steep tariff to boot. But it's quite reduced, perhaps overly so, and despite the fullness on the palate, it's tough to get through all of that reduction. There is good acidity and minerality here; and reduction notwithstanding, plenty of complexity.

  • Wow! Intense nose with complex flavors of lemon, white flowers, and tart peach. Nice acidity with lots of dry extract, more lemon notes, citrus zest, dried flowers, and green apple on the palate. The mouthfeel is sharp yet full. Long finish. This was simply outstanding! I decanted this for about 2 hours and it was showing beautifully throughout the night. Towards the end, the wine became a bit less explosive but picked up elegance. When Richard Leroy is on, I feel it's the pinnacle of Chenin Blanc (possibly along with Bernaudeau Nourrissons).

    EXCELLENT.

  • Precise, some reduction, but not sacrificing depth. A lovely Chenin but also a bit hyped for what it is as so many white burg are fashioned in a similar style.

  • My first taste of Richard Leroy. Bottle acquired -- following exhaustive searching! -- after a winemaker I met in Beaune said this was the most magical wine she'd ever tried. Well then!

Bottle consumed over three nights. At first, the nose offered up a slight hint of barnyard funk... but it wasn't overwhelming and soon dissipated into wonderful, oxidative notes.

Waxy, rich, yellow fruit you might find in a top tier white burgundy, but structured with a lightning bolt of acidity and mineralogy you can only get from the best in Loire. Complemented with savory salt and herbs, this was remarkably complex, fascinating, and super enjoyable.

I don't think I'll pay current retail if I stumble across it again, but I'll keep my eyes peeled when I'm traveling overseas.

Unlike any other Chenin blanc I've tried.
