  • A wine made from Sauvignon Blanc (70%) and Sémillon (30%) from Graves region; vinified in Pauillac, Médoc, making this wine eligible only for an AOC Bordeaux appellation. Aged for 8 months in a neutral barrique and bottled in June 2016. Only some 280 bottles made. 13,5% alcohol. The label states 3,02 g/l acidity and pH 5,0, but to my understanding the wine is 5,0 g/l in acidity (if it's in sulfuric acid equivalent, that means it's 7,5 g/l in tartaric) and pH is 3,02.

Lemon-yellow color with a pale golden core. Dry, clean and quite expressive nose of pineapple, some creamy oak, a little bit of passion fruit, light sweet notes of tropical fruit candies, a hint of fresh golden currant and a touch of ripe nectarine. The wine is wonderfully bright and precise on the palate with focused flavors of lemony citrus fruits and sharp green apple tones, some passion fruit nuances, a little bit of tangy salinity, light creamy oak tones, a sweeter hint of slightly buttery oak spice and a touch of grassy herbal character. The racy acidity lends wonderful intensity to the flavors and sense of structure to the very slightly viscous mouthfeel of the wine. The finish is lively, lengthy and firm with dry flavors of lemony citrus fruits, ripe green apples, some creamy oak tones, a little bit of fresh pineapple, light buttery oak tones, a hint of ripe golden currant and a touch of steely minerality.

This is consistently a very lovely Bordeaux Blanc that is very true to the traditional style of the region: the wine marries wonderfully the tropical, ripe Sémillon fruit with the brightness, focus and sense of structure from Sauvignon Blanc, seasoning it with a very judicious touch of oak spice, which only adds to the complexity, never really obfuscating any nuances. The wine has been simply superb right from the beginning (this was my 4th time I tasted the wine is 6-ish years) and it has never been a disappointment. It's hard to say how and when it will evolve, since there has been relatively little development here - the color has lost some of its green hue and the oaky nuances have veered slightly more towards the buttery-creamy side of things, but otherwise the wine feels as lovely as always. Not that I'm complaining - it's nice to know this wine always delivers reliably!

Quite pale lemon color with subtle greenish highlights. Clean, fresh and wonderfully expressive nose with aromas of guava and gooseberries, some floral notes of honeysuckle, a little bit of powdered salty liquorice, light creamy notes of oak, juicy hints of apricots and sweet Golden Delicious apple and a touch of honeyed richness. The wine feels fresh, clean and enjoyably structured on the palate with a medium-to-moderately full body. Focused and quite intense flavors of sweet golden apples, some savory oak spice with a slightly sawdusty edge, a little bit of creaminess, light lemony citrus fruit notes, a sweet hint of ripe cantaloupe and a slightly evolved touch of butter. There's some obvious sense of ripeness here, lending some sense of weight and viscosity to the mouthfeel, yet the almost racy acidity lends great sense of freshness and vivacity to the wine. The finish is juicy, crisp and slightly woody with long, precise flavors of ripe golden apple, some creamy oak tones, a little bit of melting butter, light fruity notes of cantaloupe and lemon, a hint of steely minerality and a touch of savory wood spice.

Consistently a very balanced, harmonious and well-made Bordeaux Blanc that combines effortlessly lots of ripe fruit with fresh and zippy acidity. Even though the blend leans heavily on Sauvignon Blanc, the wine isn't particularly green or vegetal in any way - even though Sémillon is only a small minority in the blend, it feels like the flavors emphasize mainly ripe Sémillon fruit and oaky and mineral overtones, while the Sauvignon Blanc component keeps the wine fresh, lends it great acidity and only some understated lemony nuances. All in all, a well-made and thoroughly enjoyable white Bordeaux that is still very youthful at the moment. I can see this wine improving a lot if left to age in a cellar. Lovely!

Quite pale yellow color with subtle lime-green highlights. Expressive and pleasantly nuanced nose with intense aromas of tropical fruits like pineapple and passion fruit, some creamy oak tones, a little bit of leesiness, light grassy green tones, sweet hints of gooseberries and yellow stone fruits and a touch of smoke. Lovely. The wine is fresh, firm and medium-to-moderately full-bodied on the palate with bright and slightly concentrated flavors of tart green apples, some tangy salinity, a little bit of apple peel bitterness, light creamy oak tones, a hint of quince and a touch of chalk dust. Shows nice sense of weight and even a hint of viscosity, yet at the same time coming across very focused and structured with its high acidity. The finish is firm, long and crunchy with lively flavors of creaminess, some tangy salinity, light pineapple tones, a little bit of grassy greenness, juicy hints of yellow apples and stone fruits and a woody yet not unpleasant touch of oak.

My first guess was Bordeaux Blanc and it was correct right from the get-go. The combination of judicious oak, stone fruits of Sémillon and a grassy hint of Sauvignon Blanc were pretty much telltale signs. Very balanced and harmonious effort that is still very youthful and shows great promise for future development. As a whole, the wine came slightly more oak-driven than the bottle I had some 4 years ago - I guess the youthful fruit flavors have receded a little, letting the oak tones a bit more to the fore. Nevertheless, the woody tones didn't bother one bit and the overall feel was that of wonderful freshness and balance. Terrific stuff.

Aged for 8 months in a neutral barrique and bottled in June 2016. Only some 280 bottles made. Alc: 13,5%, plus the label states 3,02 g/l acidity and pH 5,0, which sounds extremely weird for a white wine (making this wine about 100 times less acidic (?!) than a normal Bordeaux white. EDIT: I've learned that the numbers in the label are wrong and should not be trusted.

Very pale, youthful green color. Upon opening, very expressive primary aromas of banana-like fermentation esters, pineapple, a little grassy notes (reminding me of the still Cava base wines made from Xarel-lo) and something resinous. After an hour of breathing, the primary aromas have mainly blown off, revealing the true colors of the complex bouquet underneath: cream, dusty chalk minerality, waxiness, some pineapple, a little exotic fruit and a whiff of smoke. Quite full-bodied and rich palate, however not heavy nor flabby but rather firm mouthfeel. The wine comes across as moderately concentrated, yet still somehow airy. Despite its richness, there is surprisingly little fruit, which is mainly vaguely lemony and faintly pineapple-y; the rest of the flavors are more from the non-fruit side, like cream, pronounced chalky and slightly saline minerality, sur lie complexity and something mildly grassy, yet not really vegetal. Very long, complex and intriguing finish with flavors of butter, cream, saline minerality, some lemon water, a little yellow fruit and a hint of cut grass.

Very lovely and interesting Bdx white, that is something way outside the box - instead of being heavy rich and sweet (like those Sémillon-heavy whites aged in new barrels) or pungent and vegetal (like those 100% Sauvignon Blancs), this is an incredibly balanced and extremely mineral effort with understated richness and lovely depth of flavor, in which the fruit is not as dominant characteristic as the non-fruit ones are. Compelling stuff and definitely one of the most fetching Bordeaux whites I've had in a long while.
