Third bottle of this '98 and all of them have been excellent. Picked them up at a "reasonable" price quite a few years ago now; given the current prices not sure I'll be buying much more Soldera, but they are certainly benchmark sangiovese. This bottle had an excellent cork seal. The nose initially was dark fruit, tobacco, damp earth, a hint of mushroom, and violets. With air it gained freshness continuously over the night. The fruit became redder, the floral notes more fresh, and the earthy notes mostly disappeared. The balance and intensity on the palate were excellent. Definitely on the elegant side of the spectrum for sangiovese, but still powerful and excellent. A great example of power without weight. Would love to drink more Soldera at some point and its the type of wine that if you can find it and afford it, probably should go for it.

Quite mature and very pure and refined but somehow lacking the excitement and lifted intensity of most vintages of this great wine. The bottles was sound but I've not had it before so unsure if it's the vintage or the bottle at issue.

Second bottle of this; still excellent; developing and much earthier and a little darker than the previous bottle; the nose has loads of forest floor, black cherry, dried mint, a candied raspberry note, anise, worn leather, and dried violet. The palate is rich and deep, good energy and balance, tannins are minimal. Long finish. Definitely seemed to have more earth going on and a little darker than my prior bottle. But still has plenty of life left.

This was like waking a sleeping giant. Decanted and took a bit for the nose to show, but full-bodied with well integrated tannins right out of the gate. Over the next 2 hours, the nose started to present itself. Currants, blackberries and some earth tones as well. Still deep in color too. This is in a great place now.
