Slow ox two hours. Nose of black cherry, smoked meats and earth. The wine is medium bodied, fully mature, with flavors of black currant, leather, olives and spice. This has reached its mature peak and is drinking well but probably will start to decline soon.

Last bottle of a lot bought at an auction for around 85 CHF/each. Beautiful mature syrah. Drinking very well now and probably for a couple more years. This is the wine that made me discover how syrah can age. Goodbye old friend!

March Rhônes (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Meaty and fading, but clearly something from the 80s given the browning fruit. Not much oak influence here, but this definitely feels like it's on the decline. A bit of shock on the reveal as 1. this didn't have as much awful oak as Chapoutier tends to have, and 2. this tastes at least 15 years older than it is.

Open for business. Tannines still present (but supportive and resolving), gicving way to a wonderfully balanced and elegant structure of minerals spices, roses and tobacco. Gorgeous, especially next to a rustic dish of lentils, fennel, roasted potatoes and duckconfit.

Dinner with Nicola Biasi (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Its been 5 years since we had this (Papies 93) and a great wine indeed. Frankly we have had a lot of variability with Chapoutier Reds (Whites one need to have the forces of the universe with them especially post 5 years and frankly we avoid them) . This was great but also not great enough. It had all the hallmarks and the beauty but it also stopped short of being superb. Soft smoky, savory wine, elegant fruit, well balanced but we wanted fireworks. A solid 93
