  • Inky red/black color. Opaque, but no sediment. Heavy weight. Dry. Smells like a port! Jam, anise, fig, and huckleberry. Tastes of blackberries, blueberries, blood orange, and green pepper. Medium length finish. Perhaps I'm just not a fan of the style, but if I'm going to have a wine that smacks you in the face like this, I'll order a port... and a grappa chaser.

  • Dark plum and oak, smooth and pleasant. Not life changing but nice.

  • If I'd tasted this blind, I would have guessed it was predominantly Zinfandel, and you probably would have needed to set my hair on fire to convince me it came from Priorat, not Lodi. A blend of 35% carignan, 30% cabernet, 20% syrah, and 15% merlot, from a single vineyard near the village of El Molar. Not a great introduction for those interested in the distinctive minerality at the core of so many the wines that make this tiny region in Spain so unique and compelling, but not a bad wine, either...if you prefer a more jammy, fruity approach. 14.5% ABV. In the USA, the only place you'll find this bottle is Total Wine. The QPR on the Black Slate series from importer Eric Soloman/European Cellars (and many other entry level wines from the many small wineries flourishing in Priorat that you won't ever find at Total Wine) blows this away.
