Pale grassy green color. Ripe, earthy and somewhat funky nose with slightly developed aromas of honeyed richness, fresh citrus fruits, some damp autumn leaves and a cheesy hint of Manchego. The wine is rich, full-bodied and concentrated on the palate with dry flavors of ripe red apples, some stony minerality, a little bit of herbal spice and a yeasty, slightly toasty character - autolysis, perhaps? Overall the wine seems to be quite fruit-forward with the acid structure remaining in the background, making the wine appear rather heavy and fat. The finish is very ripe and concentrated with more structured, tangy flavors of pronounced stony minerality, ripe red apples, some honeyed richness, a little bit of herbal spice and a touch of pithy grapefruit bitterness. The aftertaste feels quite powerful and mouth-puckering.
A very big, powerful and concentrated Sylvaner that shows more richness than I've ever seen in this grape variety. An impressive effort in its own right, but the wine at times comes across as a bit weird flavor-wise, and the acid structure doesn't manage to lend enough sense of balance and freshness to the bold body. An interesting example of Sylvaner, but I'd love to test the wine from a cooler vintage - this 2009 feels a bit too heavy and unctuous for my taste.
