This was the last bottle of a case I bought 8 or 9 years ago. It is drinking brilliantly right now - very smooth and delicious. A great last hurrah for this vintage.

Australia is rightly famous for making blends of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre that go toe to toe with the great ones from the southern Rhone River Valley in France for their fruity and delicious drinkability. This Avignon version is dark red but not black, and features aromas of sour cherry. The sip shows refreshing acidity, still noticeable drying tannin, and a tasty fruit. The 15.5% alcohol may seem to be objectionably high but this is typical for wines made with Grenache and Syrah even in the southern Rhone. and that alcohol is not obtrusive or hot. Not as wonderfully rich, lush, and delicious as the 2010 Chateauneuf we drank right beside it, but still very good and enjoyable.

med+ purple, pale purple rim, watery white miniscus nose: med+ intensity, SUPER ripe plums, a "grapey" aroma like concord grapes in a store, a delicate floral perfume, very 'purple' dry, acid is med+ (juicy_ tannin is med (juicy again) body is med+ alc is high est 14.5 and it is 15.5, finish is med + and flavors of rich ripe black fruit, stewed plums, violets
pair this with a well charred steak. It is delicious but the alcohol is so out of control.
I bought this wine to discover what an Australian gsm (grenache, shiraz, mourvedre) would be like. Wel, this is so not the rhone valley. Ripe ripe ripe fruit, high alcohol, not a lot of finesse but it is delicious to people who enjoy sugar.
In a bind tasting, one can identify it as new world, yet Australia vs. California ... hard to tell.

Nice nose of plums, mushrooms and hints of chocolate. A bit of too much alcohol but still quite nice on the tongue. Not bad.
