  Very interesting tasting of this wine. After 22 years I really didn't know what to expect of an aged Australian pinot noir, and an inexpensive one at that!!....It was a very pleasant surprise!!! Medium garnet color, with only a clear ring and NO browning or gold around the edges. Excellent nose (refreshingly clean but complex earthy fruit with violets) from the beginning after opening which held up gloriously for the next 2 hours until the bottle was gone. For the first 30 - 45 mins after opening there were two initial taste characteristics I didn't like (a very slight spritzy metallic taste, and a slight volatile acidity that worried me some). Fortunately a little patience paid handsome dividends and these both diminished over time and disappeared entirely ("blew off") after 45 - 60 mins. The wine that remained was really worth the wait. Great earthy fruit with still enough acid and tannin left to maintain an excellent all around balance. The taste and nose reminded me of an excavated underground wine cellar with the earth and friut combination enhanced by mushrooms, leather and violets. Most importantly this bottle underscored for me how critical it is to give old wines the necessary time after opening to shed "off" characheristics and stabilize. Secondly, this is my first experience of old Australian pinot noirs and I am impressed. I've tasted some old and much more expensive Burgundies that didn't taste half as good. A lucky bottle?...maybe so. Fortunately I've got eight more bottles to sample over the next 5 years or so to find out.
