One off ($69.99) from online wine clearinghouse #1. On the nose and palate, black cherries, black raspberries, espresso, bitter chocolate, forest floor, rose hips, earthy herbality, a light note of hard to pin down red fruit, and on the initial palate, a bit of booziness. Deep crimson, full bodied, thick legs. Powerful but well balanced tannins and acidity, heat that dissipates after 30-45 minutes. Intense, persistent and complex. I’ve been a fan of this producer’s AdVs and more occasionally, Valpociellas, for some time but had not heard of this wine, a 100% corvina using the same appasimento process as in AdV. I wish I could have tasted against an AdV as a compare-contrast, because drinking it on its own, it’s pretty much of a ringer, at least to my neanderthal palate, for that wine. This came out of the bottle boozy and rough, but the booze notes left and the wine balanced out in 90 minutes-2 hours, and it became superb, muscular and vibrant, but with the structure to keep it long and true. Arguably best on its own, this struggled with the difficult homemade chicken soup but was considerably better with a spicy chicken orzo. I’m a bit puzzled by a prior taster’s note that he wished he’d had this a couple of years ago, as its feralness off the pour and strong performance over 2 nights makes me think that this has at most just breached its optimal drinking window, and perhaps isn’t even there yet, and will have years of really excellent quaffing ahead. This may not quite hit the heights of the Castellini SVD AdV, or even more so, a DF, but it’s pretty outstanding, another wonderful entry from the Land of the Boot, and a deal (to boot!) at its purchase price. Would certainly buy again. 94-95+

60 minute decant. Nose of iodine, black peppercorns, and pomegranate. Black cherry starts the palate then leads into a strong line of currant, mint, mineral, and pomegranate. Fine-grained tannins on the medium-bodied finish with sweet raspberry and a final note of vanilla.

Rose, blackberry, black cherry. Lightly grippy, with some dried orange peel and rose petals on the finish. Would like to have had this a couple of years ago.

Bought this at the Allegrini estate in Fumane, Verona in 2020. 100% Corvina Veronese (one of the main grapes in Amarone), late harvest which gives some sweetness to the wine. 20 months on oak and barriques. Intense ruby red. Red fruit and spices in the nose. Full bodied with looooong aftertaste.
