  • Open at Aix, SF. From 750ml. Purchased on release and cellared.

Opened to toast a friend who was returning to Australia after a long stint in the US. I haven't had Torbreck wines in a number of years, and this was the first RunRig I've tasted.

A wonderfully balanced wine, with an engaging and varied nose full of mellowed but pungent red fruits, complemented by hints of savory underbrush and some leathery aged syrah funk. There was a noticeable slight candied sweetness on the nose and palate that I'm not accustomed to, but it did not detract from the overall package. A very fine showing.

  • A little stink upon first opening, but it blew off. With air, it eventually developed black raspberry and mulberry, with mushrooms, forest floor, leather and spice. Medium-bodied, elegant, mellow. It seemed very Burgundian (albeit a little sweeter), much more than you might expect from this wine.

  • cork broke but condition still OK, a bit of bret at first but blew off eventually, saved half for tmw. Very elegant for an aussie shiraz, even a hint of Rhone, but although did not lacked fruit or finesse, lacked terrior feel of classic north Rhone, for the price, I stick with Cote Rotie.

  • Candies nose. Typical Barossa opening. Dark fruits, truffles, forest floor. Concentrated and long finish

  • Tasted alongside 1998. We liked this 1999 slightly better. Still dark and opaque, with a distinctive herbal nose, complex. Red and black fruits in the aroma and on the palate. Medium-full bodied, perfectly smooth and ready. Very long, balanced aftertaste. At its peak.
