I've become sensitive to candied or overt fruitiness in Willamette Valley pinot noir over the last few years. Either the warmer weather has changed the wines I used to love, I've become more sensitive to that character, or some combination of the two. (2014 Cristom Eileen and 2014 Arterberry Maresh come to mind.)
This wine is on the right side of the line for me in that regard. It really has emerged slowly. It's better now at 10 years old than it has probably ever been. Definitely more blue/black fruit along with a smoked meat and spice character. But its reserved and I would expect it evolve positively for at least another 5 years.

What a beautiful wine this evening - deep, bright, balanced, with lovely flavors and complex aromas, and went wonderfully with mushroom risotto for dinner. I read recently that the winemaker was pouring this wine for tasters at the winery, so maybe they have some for sale. It is wonderful.

I usually hate the term 'Burgundian' applied to domestic pinot noir as it's often a sloppy shorthand for 'light' or 'elegant' relative to most American pinot noir. But it really does apply here. If you threw this into a lineup of Gevrey premier crus, I think this would be really difficult to pick out as, well, un-Burgundian.
One aspect that stood out to me was the wine's focus. So many top-tier American pinot noirs are often light and elegant and have lovely fruit, but sort of become diffuse after a few hours. This took some air before it was willing to come out and play. When it did it was quite linear, with silky blue/black fruit. I also think it's early days and would benefit from another 3-4 years in bottle.

Lovely Oregon Pinot. In a perfect drinking window at the moment. Short decant helped.
