  • Magnum from a negociant bottling.
The cork was grossly disformed simply from age at 99 years.
It protruded by more than a cm and was mushroom shaped with the portion inside the bottle completely dried up with no elasticity left.
I pulled it out by hand with no corkscrew needed...
The fill level was very low shoulder which obviously was problematic but at 99 years, what can you expect?
When first opened and decanted, the soy character was obvious and the wine showed its age. With time, there was some improvement but the wine remained flawed.
The nose actually improved in the decanter overnight. (we only drank half of it as it seemed quite flawed) and showed some more typical aged Medoc character the next day: some gravel/earthy notes, a slight minty character, The texture is undoubtedly the best element in this wine with a beautiful mouthcoating velvety texture. Even the finish has cleaned up some with little noticeable soy character.
The color is very deep but with an almost mahogany hue.
Much improved on the second day.
I have no doubt that a better preserved bottle would show exceptionally well.

  • A wine that was a bit difficult to open, but once the cork was torn open silence and joy along with wonderful aromas filled the room. Unbelievable enough this wine was in good shape and surprisingly young. If I had this in a blind tasting I probably would have guessed an averaged vintage from the 1980s. Good intensity with tertiary aromas on both the nose and the palate of coffee, leather, tobacco, vanilla, green pepper and forest floor. Not much fruit left and the fruit that is left is dried. Some good concentration on the palate with uplifting acidity and polished tannins that still had some grip left. The wine slowly died out after 30-40 minutes in the glass.
