  • Reasonable wine from an unremarkable vintage. Latour character clear, but somewhat tired. 89-

  • 27 Vintages of Latour: Tertiary aromas with predominant mushroom and forest floor; not the most concentrated, but very elegant, complex finish.

  • Bought for my dads 60th. Was really quite spectacular. Was expecting it to be just drinkable and it was very good. Great color still. Poured a little light but in the glass it was a beautiful purple/red color, not really bricking at all.
Showing great layers of mushroom and earth and sour cherry. Actually still had pretty tannins. Very smooth on the palate and a real pleasure to drink wine of this age.
I'd guess it will drink well for a bit yet. Cork was showing signs of past seepage.

  • I have to say I was impressed. When Earl told me he would open a bottle of this I immediately went to Frank Dubourdiu's Les Grands Bordeanu guide. He said "In the post war period, '51 would stand out as the worst vintage till 1963..it was a catastrophe from start to finish"..... well anyway, decanted for 1.5 hours.... color was that of something in the '70's.... tasted nearly like a '71 Latour. Kept it's stuff for several hours after decanting.... still some good fruit, minerals, typical left bank bordeaux, somewhat sweet even - AMAZING for a vintage the most critics wouldn't even taste. I would have put it 2 decades earlier had I not known. Very impressed. Had been well stored in the Netherlands for decades. Thanks Earl!! (tasted with a '61 D'issan the same night). Quite a treat.
