I echo my comments from 2 years ago... this wine never came around. Fairly light in the glass. One dimensionally sharp and astringent on the nose. Little fruit in the mouth dominated by under ripe pomegranate and cherry. Gave it two days to come around. A shame as I enjoy the L Scott and other offerings from Shaps. Have the 16 Meritage and will try soon to compare.

On the nose and palate still too sharp, even after some time laying around in a decanter. Not sure there's enough fruit to carry the day, but it's a solid wine, quite high in tannins and not as much in tertiary sensations. I like Virginia wine but you rarely get what you pay for.

Dark bold fruit w/ some leather/tobacco notes on the finish. Oak a bit more present on the nose than the 2010. This was considerably fruitier & more tannic than the 2010, but was drinking well. Paired well with grilled sirloin steak

Virginia Governor's Cup Case: Medium purple color. Aromas show waves of currants and plums, clove and menthol, and a great mix of charcoal, clay soil, violets and anise – wow, these aromas evolve and shift wonderfully with air. Gorgeous balanace on the palate with sturdy tannins and crisp acidity, along with fresh but deep black currant, plums and cherry fruit. I love the complex anise, menthol, charcoal, earth and spice rub elements. I also get some cedar/coffee, deep violets. Complex, gorgeous mouthfeel, I love this now but it’ll be stellar in five to eight years.

Spectacular finish. Plum, leather and cherries are up front and a smooth finish keeps you coming back for more. Pleasantly surprised by this one.
