  • Disgorged April 2015 ("Los 04/15"), after eight years on the lees. Even if it is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it would be a mistake to compare this wine to a champagne. The main reason is that the fruit in the "vin clair" used to produce this Sekt is much riper than it would usually be in Champagne. The fruity, earthy richness delivered by the Hochheim terroirs is preserved by the long ageing on the lees, and we therefore end up with a youthful, silky wine that has a lovely core of juicy, ripe fruit, balanced by fresh acidity. The mousse is gentle, there is a lovely leesy complexity and some candied notes to testify to the wine's age. Good flavour intensity with some crème patissière and good length. As I said, this should be understood as a sparkling wine in its own right, without reference to champagne. As such, it is a very well made wine which does not claim to be the ultimate in style and elegance, but it does have a charm all of its own. And for € 25 ex-cellars, this is extremely good value for what it is.
