  • I wanted to like this more than I did. Opaque dark purple and medium bodied. The nose leads with a smell of the earth when it starts to rain after a hot dry spell … rose petals … blackberry … cranberry. The taste starts with good acidity curled around a dark and deep fruit core of bruised sweet red cherries and plums. There’s a complex under current of barnyard funk, bone marrow and iodine/bromophenols. It’s all starting to mesh in a well balanced mix that finishes with a somewhat astringent lingering white pepper finish. It’s possible this has upside with more age.

  • Nose with wet soil and some notes of raspberry. On the palate the fruit appear concentrated with not much complexity and the minerality is very shy. Some acidity, but not pleasant balanced. Semi long finish. It is surely not in a good spot right now; I hope the professional reviewers are right that the drinking window will not open until at least 2025-20230. At this point of time a disappointing 87-89P from me.

  • Clos des Epeneaux survey (Chicago, IL): Surprisingly light and lifted for a 2015, it wasn't until this saw more air that it picked up density and weight. But at the same time, it never lost that lifted elegance that in general, I really, really liked. The fruit profile is decidedly ripe (closest to the 1997 out of the wines tonight) but it's clean and doesn't have any prune/roasted elements all. Old school tannic structure, but not unapproachable now.

  • **What is it:** A 2015 Red Burgundy from one of the top lieu-dits in Pommard (there are no Grand Crus, but the betters Premier Crus are regarded as close to GC status at times). 15% whole cluster, 30% new oak.

    **Price Paid:** ~$200

**Nose:** Red raspberry, wet gravel, freshly plowed soil, a sort of woody-herbaciousness that makes me think of forests in spring, red tart cherry, black sweet cherry. It's hard to pin down any one aroma since it's just this gossamer web of woodsy herbal accents over a complex red fruit backbone.

**Palate:** Red raspberry, chalk, red plum, gravel, strawberry leaf, a sort of spice note that might be anise, blood orange peel, a sort of red flower note (herbal + floral + slightly leafy?). Acid/Tannin/Mouthfeel is nothing short of perfection with lower-for-Burgundy acid keeping everything from getting cloying while also avoiding getting ice-pick-ish.

**Takeaway:** This is clearly a stellar wine, but for the amount of money I paid, I think I wanted more. It would be far and away the best $50 bottle of wine I had, and it would stand with the best around $100, but for $200 I wanted something that hit like Ridge Monte Bello or top-tier Barbaresco. 4.5/5
