  • The bottle number here is 1255/10000. 12% alcohol.

Pale, very translucent brick-orange color with a wide, colorless rim. The nose feels dusty, old and tertiary with quite savory aromas of sun-baked earth, some dried black cherries, a little bit of sweet, raisiny fruit, a hint of crunchy red fruit and a lifted touch of VA. The wine is very full-bodied, rather concentrated and fully mature on the palate with concentrated, silky flavors of wizened red cherries, some sweet raisiny fruit, a little bit of tobacco, light herbal bitterness, a hint of sun-baked earth and a touch of balsamic VA. The wine is moderately high in acidity and the firm tannins are still moderately grippy even after all these years. The finish is gently tannic and grippy with very complex, silky and extremely lengthy tertiary flavors of sour cherry bitterness, some sweet raisiny fruit, a little bit of tobacco, light leathery tones, a hint of smoke-cured meat and a touch of balsamic VA.

A beautifully evolved, beguiling and extremely complex Chianti Classico that is very developed and rather tertiary, but still remarkably alive even after more than 60 years. An outstanding wine that shows how ageworthy these best Sangiovese wines can be. Most likely the wine isn't going anywhere from here but down, so further cellaring isn't really necessary, but I doubt the wine is going to fall apart anytime soon if it has kept so good this long. A unique experience. Highly recommended.

(Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori) Medium brick red color with clear meniscus; fading fast, but still has a core of fruit, palate of light tomato paste, tart red fruit and dried cherry; medium-plus finish
