Dark and monolithic on the nose, not giving much but earthy spice and herbs. On the palate again dark fruit. Some nice spiciness, detail and good acidity but towards the end it gets overtly bitter with just herbs, wood, tannins and acid. Might get better with som cellaring but I would have liked more, or at least brighter, fruit to have any confidence in laying these down. My wife liked it better.

Had the 2016 a few weeks back, and this 2015 is showing the same bitterness on the palate and at least initially fairly prominent and dry tannins. Also a herbal touch, likely from whole cluster fermentation. This shows better balance with some air as the tannins soften and the bitterness somewhat subsides. Initially 88 then in the low 90s - prefer Kupe.

Like Smith, but a heck of alot more fun to say. Savory and dry again on the nose. And I am told what we are drinking now is very expensive. Tax write off for Neal Empson to visit his home. Savory, tart, tangy, feral, its there. Who will give it time?

Lovely nose - red fruit cordial, mushrooms, warm hay, raisins, and something in a memory I can't get at. Palate is very much like the nose with medium tannins, medium-plus acidity. Lovely roundness. Probably needs a little time, but very good. Pricey. 14%, £33.

Pinotpalooza (Carriageworks, Redfern): Slightly confected, jubey, red berry cedar, a little skinner on the palate but still pleasantish.
