After being disappointed by an overly austere '97 Bouchard Beaune 1er over the W/E (yes, I know we're talking '97), I thought I'd give this wine a shot tonight: Deep garnet with substantial clear rim; slightly high-toned nose of dark cherries, red plum and leafy, forest floor. Great mouthfeel of silkiness yet good acidity which further brightens the fruit quality. Softening out but holding up beautifully after a few hours. Has evolved nicely - looking at CT, appears no one has tasted this in quite some time (probably lacking the courage to wait on this one). Decently nice finish. Among the best '97 1ers I've had, the gulf between the 1ers and the GCs in this vintage is immense.

3.5 hour decant. Red fruit on the somewhat reductive nose and monolithic. Sour cherry with a round mouthfeel and gritty tannins, hints of secondary characteristics. This needs lots of time. Very masculine.

(Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Champans) Deep ruby, no browning. Characteristic high toned Volnay nose of raspberries and some cherry. Deeper notes lower down too. Fresh, indeed harsh palate when first opened - but 15 minutes aeration was enough to smooth the edges. Good acidity and smooth 'I'm here if you look for me' tannins. Lovely concentrated fruit coupled with medium-plus length. This is still young - but lovely anyway.
(Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Champans) From half. Medium ruby colour with amber at the rim. Nose is clean, some alcohol with redcurrants at the top end and black cherry at the bottom, doesn't shout 'Volnay' though. The spice notes disappeared when I moved away the nearby candle which contains cloves !! There's strong acidity, which to start with is not very well balanced. Tannins are fine, with medium length fruit of the red variety. After 90 minutes things are a little better, quite good but this wine is still not worth a search. From this producer, disappointing.

A really nice bottle. Moderate complexity, slightly acidic balance, but very elegant and long. The usual cherry flavors.
I wish I had more in my cellar.
