  • A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 8, Cape Agulhas and Elim. Tasting and Dinner at the winery, with Jackie and Konrad.

    Aged in small French oak barrels, about 30% new. Medium ruby colour, leaning into garnet towards the edges. Red fruit, cherry, bacon, spices and smoke, with medium-level acidity and slightly austere tannin. The wine had very good length, but was very austere at this point. I had tasted the wine about two and a half year ago and it showed better and was very promising at that time. At that time I thought that the wine would need at least five years, and now I am thinking the same, i.e. another five years from here, only I am a little less confident that the will ever turn into a real beauty. I would pass.

  • A night with Strandveld’s & Saronsberg’s wines, with Mandy Dewing. Wine 11: 13% ABV. The wine was bright light to medium ruby in colour and offered red fruit, some smoke and some oak spice on the nose; and red fruit, some coffee, some smoke and oak spice on the palate, with medium to medium-plus acidity, medium-level tannin and good length. The medium- to full-bodied Pinot Noir had good concentration, but seemed very young and needs time. I would recommend holding for at least five years. 89+ for now, with potential to improve.
