  • Matthiasson Red Wine 2003–2008 (Tucson, Arizona): Violets, candy, plums. Unctuous on the palate, rich fruit with strong integrated tannins. Intense, charming, delicious.

  • Was a treat to see this come to the dinner with Jill. This was the first Red Wine made by the winery and so there isn't much of it around (confirmed by the small # of bottles in CT inventory, too). Poured next to the 2012 Red Wine for contrast. The 2003 shows the riper tone of the vintage, and also the early Matthiasson style, something it is quite different (and to my own liking) within the style of the 2012. Riper kind fo aromatic, with spice, sweet tobacco and red fruit. The palate shows a ripe cherry, herb and a glossy texture with cedary acidity in the finish.

  • Matthiasson Dinner (FMIII in the OC): First vintage, thanks for sharing. Dark crimson color. Ripe plum fruit, reminds me a bit of a zin. Fine smooth tannins and chalk dust. Like a ripe European merlot.

  • Inaugural vintage by Steve. A sleek, rich red dominated by Merlot. Still youthful but stylistically I didn't care for this wine. Nothing wrong with it but I purchased it thinking from all the press that it was old-school California, which was not the case.

  • Opened my only bottle, a manum, won at Blue Oak School auction where I met the winemaker. This bottle was served to two friends. It showed a beautiful nose of cabernet and merlot, hints of bright black cherry fruit, lovely but not intense nose that continued to expand throughout the evening. Comments included rich, sweet fruit, lovely, soft, elegant, delicious, rich flavors that coated the mouth, medium long finish that made you want to drink more. The next evening I finished the last 10 ounces. It opened gradually, stored overnite in the refrigerator, on the patio and soon was showing the beautiful bottle bouquet of the previous night. Even brighter richer black cherry nose, more of the same in the mouth, even richer and creamier than the evening before. I would rate 93 points this time. Lovely wine, wish more was available.
