Under the capsule there was lots of hard, white crust, so obviously not wine, it just looked like dirt, and the cork was in place and did is job, but was also loose and crumbly. Beyond that, this was probably the best bottle yet (number 11 for us) of this wine, the expected softly tannic and savory maturity topped with fresh sweet red fruit, extremely easy to drink. Enjoyed with a buffet of leftovers.

Classic notes all around. Still fresh and has plenty of time ahead of it. Bottled in 1978, so vintage is 1973.
Leather, tobacco, and light cherry on the nose. Plenty of dried cherries and orange peel on the tongue along with a healthy amount of bright fruit and some nice forest floor and herb notes.
Excellent Rioja from an excellent vintage.

Unlike the previous almost dead bottle, under a moldy and crumbling cork this one was excellent, fresh fruit along with leather and a little smoke, enjoyed with sous vide strip steaks.

The top of this bottle had a nasty crust, the cork crumbled, and the nose began with a mild stink. An hour or so of air cured all this, and left the great combination of fresh intensity and mature gentlenass which distinguishes older LdH wines, delicious with prime rib slices.

From memory. This bottle had a lower fill, and tasted thin and tired by comparison.
