  • And yet another bottle that's a shy shadow of its former glory. I'm starting to feel like I got ripped off, like I got suckered into liking this wine thinking there was stuffing behind all that toasty oak. Nope. Just vegetables, hay, asparagus and some cranberry. I can't say for certain whether this is a dumb phase for this wine; the track record behind this parcel is unknown to my palate. I'll hold on to the last two bottles and hope for the best, that it comes out of this funk and delivers the punch I thought I felt the summer of '07. Stay tuned...or don't. Euro 45/btl these days is a j-o-k-e. Anybody paying that much for German Pinot Noir is paying for the name alone. Nothing else. Why drop that kind of loot when you can go south by southwest a few hours and get the real deal, some true Villages and Premier Cru for 10, 15, 20 Euro less?

Or just buy Germany's only true Premier Cru beauty, Kruger-Rumpf's 'R' bottling, for Euro 20/btl.

  • Another bottle that just doesn't seem like its former self. Not flawed, but not the Schweigen masterpiece this has been in the past. I suspect this wine has either shut down hard, or is characteristic of a greater flaw...I hope it's the former case, but the latter raises suspicions that much of what makes German Pinot so delicious YOUNG is the deft use of oak to mask the lack of full pheno/physio development. Who knows? Of the last five or six bottles of pre-2005 Pinot, five or six have been overtly alcoholic and herbacious, or simply lackluster in comparison to their two or three year old selves. I do believe, however, that more experimentation is necessary.

(Becker Pinot Noir Sankt Paul) Now the fireworks started to happen. Beautiful nose of raspberries, bing cherries and exotic spices. Palate is layered, juicy and very complex with great delineation. The finish is unreal. Long and winding exhibiting wonderful nuance and length. Like a Corton or Nuits St. Georges. Has the dense structure of Corton and Nuits St. Georges while showing a nice rustic charm. This will age beautifully.
